The History of Palm Beach Gardens

Preface

There is little question that the City of Palm Beach Gardens had one of the most unique births compared to most any other city in United States. Unlike others that were started by a group of people whose purpose was to join together for a common good, "The Gardens," as it is fondly referred, got its start as a raw piece of land and the drive of John D. MacArthur.

Many, who did not know him personally, as I did, cast him as an eccentric billionaire. He was in fact, a true visionary. He saw what so many have missed in reality and proceeded to design and develop a purpose for the area that brought the best of life's values into fruition. Not just houses and streets, but a truly integrated life style that wasn't a programmed community as so many of the retirement communities have turned out to be.

His vision was to have a city, controlled by its residents, which realized the two greatest aspects of a viable community: unparalleled recreation opportunities and an excellent base of clean, well paid employment opportunities.

In 1958, the ground was broken for the first structure in the city. Since that time some 50,000 residents have come to call it home. Its purposeful charter, created by visionary John D. MacArthur, has fulfilled that special character that exemplifies a wonderful way of life for a community that ranges from young families to senior citizens.
